[IATCB] News and updates for October 2022

Board Happenings:

The weekend of September 10th and 11th was a busy one for the IATCB. We met at Zoo Atlanta for our first in person meeting since 2019. We greeted our fellow board members and welcomed new ones. And then we got down to business and reviewing, editing, approving and declining the test questions for the 2023 and 2024 Animal Training tests.

We did take a bit of time to have some fun by enjoying the fantastic bird show at the Zoo Atlanta “World of Wild” theater and of course stopping to see the pandas at the request of Karen, our representative from the Professional Testing Corporation (PTC), who facilitates the test review every year.

Look what is taking shape in Brentwood, Essex, UK at Old McDonald’s Farm.

Watch trainers Lilly and Frankie training Spice, one of three highland cattle to enter the crush for annual vaccinations. Previously the cattle were herded into the crush for their annual TB vaccinations. This was a stressful time for the keepers and the cows and generally required all the staff to be on hand to help. In April, Nicky Plaskitt, owner of Shaping Behaviour began helping the keepers train the cattle to enter the crush voluntarily. The team is very busy but are also very enthusiastic about the training. By June, Herb, the older female was happily entering the crush. But the two boys, Sugar and Spice were still hesitant, and Herb kept pushing past them. Not helpful, Herb. A little adjustment of the antecedents and Spice started entering the crush on his own. Sugar was showing the most nervous behavior, but now he is also entering the crush. The vet is due in the next couple of months and the team is excited to show them how easy it will be to vaccinate this year. To watch a training session, just click on the link. Nice job team!
