Lisa Longo, CPBT-KA, CBCC-KA took a moment to share with us.

“My name is Lisa Longo and I am the founder of Animal Académie, a French company that offers in homes consultations for dogs, cats and parrots’ owners to help them live in harmony with their pets.

I first heard about the IATCB during a workshop at the Natural Encounters ranch in Florida. I had already graduated from Dr. Susan Friedman’s courses LLA (Leaving and Learning with Animals) and LLP (Leaving and Learning with Parrots) and as I was passionate about birds and wanted to specialize, I thought that the Certified Professional Bird Trainer certification would be the best next step to achieve this.

After my registration for the exam validated, I started studying by reading a lot of books related to applied behavior analysis, husbandry and enrichment, ethics and public education, among others. All these readings allowed me to increase my knowledge, resulting in a success with the exam.

Passing an exam in a foreign language in a foreign country was not easy, but the pride of becoming a CPBT-KA at the end was even greater.

I was the first and only certified professional bird trainer in France at that time and my story may have inspired other trainers and educators, which is basically my greatest achievement.

This certification, in addition to allowing me to gain credibility in my field, increased my knowledge and made me want to continue to invest in learning.

I encourage anyone who is thinking of getting certified to take the plunge as it can offer an incredible professional and personal growth.”

Have you signed up for the 29th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IAATE Virtual 2021: Connecting Continents? MARCH 3-6, 2021. Earn up to 25.5 CEUs from the comfort of your couch! 

The CPBT-KA and CPAT-KA credential is valid for 5 years from the date it is awarded. To renew the credential a certificant must either re-take the examination after 5 years or accumulate sixty Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) by attending IATCB approved workshops, seminars, classes, or conferences.   Head over to here to check out a list of approved CEUs!

Monitoring great ape heart health through innovative electrocardiogram technology: Training methodologies and welfare implications

Heart disease is a major cause of mortality in zoo-housed great apes. Species Spotlight

Spotted Thick-knee; Burhinus capensis; also known as Cape Thick Knees.    They are found in Southwestern and southern Africa.  Their Habitat is woodland edge, savannas, thorn scrub. They have large spots on its back and a barred tail. Leg joints are knobby. Eyes are large and yellow. Face is brown, and bill is black. Breast is cinnamon streaked and spotted with blackish-brown. They have strong legs and weak flight capabilities, predisposing them to a life on the ground.  These solitary birds live in dry areas and cope with daytime sun and heat by taking cover under trees and bushes. They are fairly numerous throughout their range. Cape thick-knees mate for life and are protective parents, nesting in a shallow scrape next to a small landmark. They raise only one to two chicks at a time.  Did you know the Cape thick-knee's "thick knees" are actually its knobby ankles!

IUCN states this species has an extremely large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion.
